Florida Atheists Scrub Away Highway Blessing With ‘Unholy Water’ Because They‘re Not Going to Tolerate ’Bigotry’

The latest fight between atheists and religious groups leaves one asking who really crossed the line.
Polk County, Florida, sits smack in the middle of the Sunshine State containing several highways drivers travel through to make their way between major cities in the state. Last year, area religious leaders formed a group, Polk Under Prayer (PUP), that decided to bless the Pasco-Polk county line along Highway 98. PUP’s director said the act was done so that “God would protect us from evildoers, mainly the drug crowd, that they would be dissuaded to come in to the county.”
This gesture has apparently offended area atheists deeply enough that they felt the need to organize an event Saturday to symbolically scrub away the holy oils used by PUP to bless the county line. Bay News 9 reports that the atheists, organized by Humanists of Florida, used “unholy water” to remove the blessing and wash the road because it made them feel uncomfortable:
“But Humanists of Florida members don’t see it that way. They say it makes them feel unwelcome.
‘It sends a very bad signal to everyone in Polk County, and (anyone) who travels through Polk county who doesn’t happen to be Christian,’ Palmer said, ‘This event is not about atheist rights; this is about welcoming everybody into Polk county.’
So they took their ‘unholy water’ and washed the road.
It’s been an ongoing feud between the groups in the county: the atheists are also unhappy with prayer bricks PUP members buried along I-4 and various other roadway leading in to the county, engraved with Psalm 37.

“I see that both Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum now have Secret Service with them on the camp trail. And in Santorum’s case, I think it‘s the first time that he’s actually ever used protection,” Brown said, referring to the former Pennsylvania senator’s staunch opposition to birth control.
Judge rules school must allow access to sexually explicit LGBT sites

A federal judge has ordered a Missouri school district to unblock its web filters and give students access to sexually explicit material by the middle of March.
A US District Judge issued a preliminary junction against the Camdenton R – III School District banning them from using filtering software. The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit against the district claiming it was deliberately restricting access to homosexual themed sites, while allowing students to view what it claims are “anti-LG BT sites that condemn homosexuality.”
In issuing its ruling, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri said the district’s custom filtering system “systematically allows access to websites expressing a negative viewpoint toward LGBT individuals by categorizing them as ‘religion,’ but filters out positive viewpoints toward LGBT issues by categorizing them as ‘sexuality.”
Joe Ortwerth, executive director of the Missouri Family Policy Council, says, “When you consider that there’s a federal law on the books that obligates school districts to ensure that their computers do not allow access to materials that might be pornographic for minors, this judge’s action — considering that — is pretty shocking.”
The ACLU’s website claims that schools cannot block LGBT sites claiming that to do so is a violation of the First Amendment. “Programs that block all LGBT content violate First Amendment rights to free speech, as well as the Equal Access Act, which requires equal access to school resources for all extracurricular clubs, including gay-straight alliances and LGBT support groups.”
Among the sites the ACLU says students have a right to view is the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. The site provides a link to “It Gets Better” which is a program advocating the homosexual lifestyle founded by Dan Savage, a “gay” sex columnist.
Savage is known for his vulgar and raunchy columns. He was also responsible for “bullying” Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum by creating a “Google bomb” that attached a vile sex term to the candidate’s name.

American Teacher Shot by Al Qaeda-Linked Militants in Yemen

Two militants shot and killed an American teacher in Yemen early Sunday, an attack for which Al Qaeda is claiming responsibility, according to Reuters.
The gunmen rode up on a motorcycle and gunned down English language teacher Joel Shrun in his car in the central Yemeni city of Taiz, a regional governor told the Associated Press. Officials at the Swedish Institute — a language school where Shrun was also deputy director — identified him as the victim and said he was born in 1983.
The assailants escaped after the attack. A police source told Reuters they are believed to be linked to Al Qaeda.
In a text message sent to local media outlets, the group claimed Shrun was spreading Christianity and said he was one of the biggest missionaries in Yemen, CNN reported.
“This operation comes as a response to the campaign of Christian proselytizing that the West has launched against Muslims,” the message reportedly said.
The U.S. Embassy in the capital of Sanaa told CNN it had heard reports of an American death and was investigating, though did not confirm an American had been killed.
