The Religious Society of Friends, also known as the Quakers, of which the Salisbury Friends Worship Group is a part, is a denomination or movement within the larger Christian community with a rich and interesting history. Originally a movement of the Holy Spirit in England, Quakers came to America and settled in Maryland, the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Delaware, and other areas of the Northeast. They soon spread across the country and the world.
Today, Quakers continue to meet together for worship in meetinghouses, homes and other locations. While we honor our past, we seek to be a lively and vital Spirit-led community that reaches out to all with a living faith and hope in Christ Jesus, our Teacher and Lord who has come to teach His people Himself.
A Quaker meeting for worship involves the congregation gathering at a pre-set time in order to wait silently, remembering the promise of our Lord that where two or three are gathered together in His name, there He is in the midst of us. As led by the Holy Spirit, Friends may rise to sing, pray, read scripture, or minister in word to fellow believers, if they sense the Lord has truly given them something to share at that moment. All are welcome to worship with us.

Blurring the Line Between Bloggers and Journalists

A decision by a federal judge in Oregon rippled through the blogosphere after the court ruled bloggers are not media and a Montana blogger must pay $2.5 million in damages.

An Oregon attorney, Kevin Padrick, and the company he co-founded, Obsidian Finance Group LLC, filed a defamation lawsuit against a blogger, Crystal L. Cox of Eureka, Mont., after she called him a thief and a thug on her blog and criticized how he handled a bankruptcy case.

In a written opinion, the judge, Marco Hernandez, ruled the protections that cover reporters working for mainstream media organizations did not apply to her because she is not a journalist.

“The court in that case pointed out that in Oregon, no journalist is protected in a defamation case,” said Nathan Siegel, an attorney who specializes in First Amendment law and an adjunct professor at The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. “The reality in that particular case is a journalist would not have been protected whether they were a blogger or not.”

Hernandez noted in his written opinion that the plaintiffs were not public figures and the bankruptcy proceedings she blogged about were not a matter of public concern.

Most courts find that the First Amendment protects all individuals from defamation suits whether they are a blogger or not, according to Siegel.

“The court in that case said that bloggers are not afforded any of those protections,” he said. “That’s a very unusual decision.”

The question of whether bloggers should be considered journalists has become imperative as the number of cases similar to the one in Oregon is increasing due to a jump in individuals creating blogs and the use of blogs by mainstream media organizations, according to Siegel.

In court, the question of whether journalists’ protections and privileges will be afforded to bloggers could boil down to employment, according to Siegel. Maryland’s shield law, which protects reporters from having to disclose information concerning confidential sources, applies to student journalists and reporters employed by news organizations.

Salisbury resident Jonathan Taylor, a blogger who created the Lower Eastern Shore News website, said bloggers should not be treated the same as journalists because journalists are held to higher standards. He said he views bloggers as being more of a supplement to journalists.

“While I do not believe bloggers are journalists, I think we should be afforded some protections,” he said.

Taylor said he often consults with his attorney before posting information on his website.

While the standards for journalists and bloggers may not be equal, Taylor said he believes there should be a code of ethics or conduct for bloggers.

“Blogs are a newer form of modern media, but there are no guidelines for what we do,” he said. “It’s like the wild West. Everybody can do what they want.”

Demonstrators: Jobs, not cuts, are priority, Really?

Chants echoed though the downtown plaza late Tuesday morning as a group of more than 20 people protested in front of Rep. Andy Harris’ Salisbury office, demanding he focus on “jobs, not cuts.”

The protest was organized by MoveOn.org and local progressive blogger Ron Pagano, who said he wants the congressman to focus on working to pass the American Jobs Act proposed by President Barack Obama.

Pagano said he believes the legislation will help create jobs in places like the Eastern Shore. He added the idea that cutting taxes for corporations to create jobs, a possible avenue to economic growth promoted by Harris, has been disproved.

Pagano and others who gathered in front of The Gallery Building urged Harris to focus on creating jobs by investing in 21st century energy and public education, ending wars and taxing Wall Street speculation.

“(Harris) says what we need to do is lower taxes for corporations and the wealthy,” Pagano said. “We know that hasn’t worked. Corporations are bringing in more money now than ever.”

Pagano said if Harris and the Republican Party are unhappy with the jobs bill proposed by Obama, they should pen their own.

Blogger Joe Albero Continues to Personally Attack other Private Citizens

Regardless of what anyone else says, Jonathan Taylor was targeted by local powers and the Dr. Seuss attorneys went after him to cease and desist immediately.

In typical style, Taylor refuses to tell the truth about these demands and instead is sending in a ton of comments on Salisbury News recommending people go to another Website, (as if we’d allow such comments to go through).

It has been reported that another group of concerned citizens are threatening a lawsuit against Taylor and the state disability group because it has been proven Taylor is more than capable of earning a living and could be taking income without reporting it to that department.

Taylor has a good chance of losing his disability income as well as his subsidized housing.

I happen to know first hand who’s behind this and quite frankly Taylor pissed off the wrong people in the right places. There could even be the possibility of criminal charges and fraud.

One thing is for sure, Taylor’s Site is in fact shut down for good and I can guarantee you he will not re open it again. Things are about to get real interesting in the blogosphere.

Laura Mitchell Statement On Lord’s Prayer Issue

“Our first work session was extensive and productive. I am now the Council representative on the Airport Commission, Tri-County Council, and the Zoo Commission. In addition to the agenda items (tow ordinance and health care consortium agreement), we also touched on what we want to accomplish in our tenure on the Council. One topic that I broached was to discuss replacing The Lord’s Prayer with silent prayer. Although the initial suggestion came from another member (who chose not to bring it up), I have long felt that the recitation of a prayer from a singular religion was exclusionary. Not to mention that the courts have ruled that government meetings should not show such preference to any religion. I am not aware of any formal complaints, but must we wait for such to make a change that the high court has said we should make? Equally as important, shouldn’t we want to be more inclusive in our City governance? I believe so. We are constantly asking our citizens to get involved, share your concerns, come to meetings. If that is what we really want-and I certainly do- than I feel we should do all we can to make everyone feel welcome. I believe that allowing individuals to worship or pray in the manner of their choosing before the meeting is a very sensible way to accomplish that goal. I am not trying to remove religion from our City or even our meetings, I am simply suggesting that we be respectful of the diversity in our community and even on our Council. I hope that you can understand where I am coming from on this but I am happy to talk with you individually about it if you wish.”

Part 2 Of How It All Began

With Barrie Tilghman now his main target he then gets into a war with everyone Barrie Tilghman has hired including Chief Of Police Allan Webster who saw Joe as the pathological Liar he was from the beginning. Joe begins the Chief Jack and Coke line of posts along with the insinuations that Barrie Tilghman is breaking the law with getting illegal work done on her property by City employees, this leads to lawsuits by both of them against Joe.

During this time frame a new thing develops called an “anti-albero blog” several people notibly Karen Wells from the Off The Cuff Blog, Joe Perdue from Salisbury Soapbox and Susan Rainey from A Class Act. These blogs started letting people know about the lies and misinformation that were being spewed on sbynews. These people immediately became targets for Joe as he could not stand the truth getting out as he preferred being the only blog telling people what to think. It wasn’t just an attack on the people but their families, their income and anything else he could attack to bring them down including threats of lawsuits, criminal charges you name it. Most of these blogs shut down because of this which made Joe feel like he could do that to anyone else that dared challenge him.

The really strange event that most people don’t realize is that John Robinson and Joe were good friends during the 2006 beginning of 2007 area until the day that John had Jim Rapp on his radio show and didn’t allow Joe to call in and to act the ass toward him on the air, this made John an enemy for not allowing Joe his public payback of the man he felt was responsible for Jennifer losing her job. From that point forward it was an all out hate fest between the two. That is what it is like to be a friend to Joe, if you don’t do exactly what he thinks you should he will turn on you immediately.

It was also during this period that Joe found his love for the fire department. Remember anyone that was a friend of Barrie Tilghman=enemy in Joes mind. Bill Gordy had parked his car while on official business in a metered spot downtown in early 2007 and when Joe happened by and saw the meter had expired in his sick mind he had a gotcha. He finds out the car belonged to Bill Gordy who also happened to be Gary Comegy’s treasurer for his campaign, well from that point on you know the history, daily Gordy this Gordy that attacks. He also begins attacks against Bill Gordy’s son Jeremy all because of who Bill was friends with and an expired meter.

How Did It All Begin?

Well from many years of being involved in the blogging world and being public enemy number 1 in his book, I have gotten to talk to lots of people who have told me the story of Joe and how he became the monster we all know now.

Any discussion of this must begin at the Salisbury Zoo where it all originated from. Jennifer Albero worked there and had some issues regarding Jim Rapp then Zoo Director. Jennifer ends up losing her court case against the zoo and her job which in turn sets the animal off within Joe. He decides he will document the zoo every inch of it looking for illegal activities to get back at them for dare messing with his wife. This began in 2003 click here for Jennifer’s Issues

His In-laws live next door to of all people Debbie Campbell so he gets to know Debbie very well on the trips to the Goetz household. Debbie of course has issue with many people in the City so a common bond forms. Debbie shares her tales of woe regarding Mike Dunn, Barrie Tilghman, Lynn Cathcart and many more actually too numerous to mention..open a phonebook with Joe. Albero of course likes to be made to feel important so this figures prominently in his defense of Debbie Campbell.

Well in the mean time issues at the zoo intensify so Joe sets up a meeting with Barrie Tilghman regarding them, when Barrie Tilghman doesn’t nod her head and agree to Joes demands she becomes public enemy #2 behind Jim Rapp. Debbie has huge issues with Barrie so she sees an ally in Joe, someone that can go about attacking for her but give her the plausible deniability so she looks innocent of any misdeeds, and Joe has no problem with said arrangement.

He already has a criminal record including battery on Sharon Gravel which he was put on probation for in 1991. In 2003 as stated a temporary peace order was given to Jim Rapp to keep Joe from harassing him, also Mary Seamann. Karen Jones not only filed a temporary peace order but was granted a full one to keep Joe away from her for 6 months. Those listed above are all zoo employees.

While in this war with the zoo other enemies now make his radar. He starts coming to Salisbury City Council meetings to annoy Barrie Tilghman and others such as Mike Dunn and Lynn Cathcart.Why do you ask, well it’s simple in Joes world. Debbie dislikes the victims and in Joes minuscule mind because Barrie Tilghman is on his shit list anyone that is friendly toward her is also an enemy. This includes the Chief Of Police Allan Webster. This is in the same days as Joes famous ” waste of sperm” email to Barrie Tilghman.
