Organized medical fraud in Wisconsin

“Primum nil nocere.” First, do no harm. This bedrock principle in medicine is a foreign language to most politicians and, sadly, to some Wisconsin doctors, who have violated their oath and the public trust as they have defrauded Wisconsin taxpayers.

Several University of Wisconsin family physicians donned their sacred white coats and were caught distributing fraudulent “sick notes” free for the asking quite literally by the boxful – I wonder who paid for that printing – to teachers and others who skipped work to engage in political protest at the state Capitol in Madison. Whatever the merits of the teachers’ protest, there’s a word for what these doctors and teachers are perpetrating: fraud.

An army of citizen-journalist bloggers, including Tim Daniels of Left Coast Rebel and Ann Althouse, captured and publicized photographs and video allegedly of publicly funded University of Wisconsin doctors Kathy A. Oriel, James H. Shropshire, Lou Sanner, Hannah M. Keevil, Patrick McKenna and Elizabeth Kvach as they disseminated these fraudulent notes to Wisconsin’s publicly funded teachers so the teachers could have a publicly funded day off.

“I’m a doctor. Need a note?” read one sign held high near Dr. McKenna as he openly defrauded taxpayers. “We see a lot of sore throats from speaking out, sore feet from walking, a lot of people kind of chilly, under stress. We say the best thing you can do is be with a large support group,” said Dr. Sanner in a pathetic rationalization despite video confirmation that neither he nor his colleagues examined any throats or feet before making their diagnoses and issuing doctor’s notes.

Meanwhile, taxpayers and students are paying dearly. According to the Department of Education, two-thirds of Wisconsin public school eighth-graders cannot read at a proficient level. And yet, while the average total compensation of a Milwaukee public school teacher is a staggering $100,005 per year, these entitled teachers demand that taxpayers pay them, quite literally, to agitate for more tax money.

Austria’s Tootsie

It’s not only in America that political correctness and affirmative action have run amok. From Europe comes a wacky story that calls up the amusing cross-dressing and role reversals in the Hollywood movie “Tootsie.”

In this case, it’s not a down-on-his-luck male actor (Dustin Hoffman) pretending to be a woman to jump-start his career. It’s a down-on-his-luck political cartoonist in Austria named Markus Szyszkowitz. Deciding he could turn his country’s political correctness to his advantage, Szyszkowitz reinvented himself as a political cartoonist named “Rachel Gold” — a young and attractive Jewish immigrant from Israel.

And incredibly, he became much more successful as Rachel Gold than as himself.

Posing as Gold, Szyszkowitz produced cartoons with a different style. They also had a hard-hitting liberal viewpoint, one that Szyszkowitz believes neither editors nor readers would have as readily accepted had he done them himself. He thinks this was due more to the fact that Rachel Gold was Jewish than female, owning to Austria’s terrible history regarding its Jewish citizens.

Among other benefits of being Rachel Gold, Szyszkowitz became one of Austria’s top cartoonist. “Rachel Gold” even took over the old job he’d lost for having offended a politician who later became Austria’s chancellor.

A New Drug for American Teens

Making inroads among students in school systems across the nation is a new drug known as “spice.” Also known as K2, spice is a mixture of herbs and spices that typically is sprayed with a synthetic compound chemically similar to THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. It mimics the effects of marijuana and can be purchased in head shops, tobacco shops, various retail outlets and over the internet as a chemically-laced incense product.

Not surprising is that spice has become a problem in the military. The Navy recently discharged 16 sailors assigned to the USS Bataan for using or dealing spice. Seven midshipmen were also expelled from the Naval Academy and five cadets from the Air Force Academy. During the last four months 151 sailors have been accused of using or possessing spice under the Navy’s zero tolerance policy.

Spice made its entry into the U.S. from Europe in 2008 when a public high school in the North Shore suburbs of Chicago reported the first Illinois school drug overdose involving spice. The drug caused the student to experience a marijuana-like high which led to a severe anxiety/panic attack. The student related how he had purchased the drug over the Internet, smoking it just before the start of the school day. The package in the student’s possession had as its ingredients: “Herbal extracts of Blue Lotus flowers, Bay Bean, Dwarf Skullcap, Lion’s Tail, and others — all legal. Troubling is that hospital urine tests do not detect spice.

Michael Moore is all about Money

Michael Moore, who never met a rich man he didn’t hate, is suing the backers of his fantasy “Fahrenheit 9/11” over…wait for it – “financial deception” – and cheating him out of $2.7 million in profits.

The avowed socialist appears to love money as much as any dyed in the wool capitalist – an irony lost on Mr. Blubberhead.

The Hollywood Reporter:

In a lawsuit filed today in Los Angeles Superior Court, Moore says the Weinsteins and an affiliated entity called the Fellowship Adventure Group agreed to split profits from the film 50-50 but then diverted monies to hide them from Moore.

The suit for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and constructive fraud claims that in 2008 Moore conducted an audit of the 2004 film, which grossed $222 million worldwide, and “discovered substantial irregularities in the accounting” that resulted in a “gross underpayment to [Moore],” the lawsuit says.

Those irregularities include an alleged secret deduction of $2.5 million in revenue that the Weinstiens claimed was paid to acquire an interest owned in the film by a predecessor company called Icon Entertainment International; a 7.5% “override” fee on advertising costs in the amount of $1.2 million, “despite the fact that [the Weinsteins] did not incur the advertising costs and the [deal] did not permit [them] to deduct these costs”; as well as additional improper deductions of fees paid to distribution consultants, accountants, residuals, foreign taxes and travel expenses, including what Moore says are the “grossly excessive and unreasonable” costs of hiring a private jet to carry a single passenger to Europe.

One Hollywood leftist screwing another Hollywood leftist out of their money. Someone ought to make a movie out of this.

AOL-Huffpo merger gives liberal media a huge, new platform

The AOL-Huffington Post merger destroys one media outlet that had plenty of conservative commentary and creates a potentially massive new liberal news portal that will reach as many as 100 million Americans a month.

New York Times:

The two companies completed the sale Sunday evening and announced the deal just after midnight on Monday. AOL will pay $315 million, $300 million of it in cash and the rest in stock. It will be the company’s largest acquisition since it was separated from Time Warner in 2009.

The deal will allow AOL to greatly expand its news gathering and original content creation, areas that its chief executive, Tim Armstrong, views as vital to reversing a decade-long decline.

Arianna Huffington, the cable talk show pundit, author and doyenne of the political left, will take control of all of AOL’s editorial content as president and editor in chief of a newly created Huffington Post Media Group. The arrangement will give her oversight not only of AOL’s national, local and financial news operations, but also of the company’s other media enterprises like MapQuest and Moviefone.

By handing so much control over to Ms. Huffington and making her a public face of the company, AOL, which has been seen as apolitical, risks losing its nonpartisan image. Ms. Huffington said her politics would have no bearing on how she ran the new business.

Ms. Huffington is one of the most aggressively partisan presences on the web, so her statement that “politics would have no bearing” on what appeared on the websites is a crock. Even if she’s sincere, she doesn’t know how to be non-partisan. In the 3 decades she has been commenting as a pundt, she has never once demonstrated one ounce of balance or even handedness in her take on the news. Why should anyone believe her now?

Every effort by conservatives to come up with a news portal to match Huffpo has failed. We better get busy. The left just got a big boost in connecting with the average American and with the 2012 elections coming up, you can expect they’ll exploit this advantage for all that it’s worth.

Obama must be joking

It’s no wonder that the Chamber of Commerce didn’t do its best Nancy Pelosi cheerleading impression during yesterday’s speech by Barack Obama. Flashback: Remember when Nancy Pelosi sat behind PrezBO at his State of the Union address and it appeared as though there were springs in her seat? She kept popping up and clapping with that fake grin plastered on her face. Well anyway .. that is entirely the opposite reaction that Obama got from the Chamber of Commerce yesterday. Apparently he was only interrupted by applause twice during his 35 minute speech. I have a sneaking suspicion that that the Chamber could not have applauded, even if it wanted to (though it didn’t want to) .. because they were just stunned by some of the words billowing forth from our dear leader, the Community Organizer.

Let’s try this little goodie, for example …

“If we’re fighting to reform the tax code and increase exports, the benefits cannot just translate into greater profits and bonuses for those at the top. They have to be shared by American workers, who need to know that opening markets will lift their standard of living as well as your bottom line.”

You read that correctly, folks. “They have to be shared by American workers.” How do you like that?

Now … let’s do a quick Cliff Notes review of this man as it relates to commerce and the private markets.

Barack Obama is a man who has:

* Never had to write a business plan
* Never had to review a business plan to determine its worthiness
* Never had to create a budget for a private business
* Never had to calculate the economic worth of an existing or new employee for a business
* Never had to worry about the cost of benefits provided to a business employee
* Never had to worry about whether or not a business was making a profit
* Never had to explain to a boss or to shareholders why a business was losing money
* Never had to file a business tax return
* Never had to talk to an accountant about business matters
* Never had to hire an attorney to deal with business matters
* Never had to worry about the effects of government regulations on a business he owns or operates
* Never had to tell an employee that he was being let go because business was slow
* Never had to place a “help-wanted” ad looking for a new worker
* Never had to look at a list of revenues and expenses to determine how much a new employee can be paid.
* Never had to face competition from a new business down the street

…. And most importantly:

Barack Obama is a man who has referred to the private sector as “the enemy.” And don’t think that these men and women of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce didn’t remember that line while he was reading his teleprompter in front of them yesterday.

In short … this is a man who has no idea in the universe what it means to own and operate a business, yet there he is telling businesses that they have to go out there and figure out how they can hire more people? Is he serious? In what parallel universe does it become the purpose and overriding objective business to simply try to figure out how to hire more people?

Let’s look bad at some of Obama’s previous utterings:

* “At some point you just have to admit you’ve made enough money.”
* “You need to spread the wealth around.”
* And one of my all-time favorites: You have to raise taxes not to increase government revenue, but “out of fairness.”

That’s right! It’s just not fair that you are earning that much money … se we have to take it from you and spread it around.

We have an avowed enemy of the private sector .. a man with zero business experience himself .. standing up in front of a room of businessmen and telling them that they are actually in business to hire people and share the wealth. WRONG! They are in business to make money for their owners and/or shareholders. To do that they hire people who can help produce wealth, and they pay those people a competitive wage to keep them on the payroll. This, of course, is completely lost on someone who considers the private sector to be his enemy. That’s OK though … the private sector looks at him the same way.

I am reminded of that Russian Newspaper article that appeared right before Obama was elected. The Pravda newspaper ran an article, “American Capitalism Gone with a Whimper” for a title? Here’s a quote from the article:

“It must be said, that like the breaking of a great dam, the American descent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed, against the back drop of a passive, hapless sheeple, excuse me dear reader, I meant people.”

This article had it exactly right. Obama is the result of a “sheeple” population that was more interested in his coolness than they were in his policy or experience. We are sliding toward Marxism whether we like it or not because of our own failure as a nation to educate our electorate, allowing them to understand for themselves the danger of a man like Barack Obama in the White House.
