Left-wing activists are blocking a budding U.S. energy resource

In a year clouded by worries over jobs, budget deficits, and energy costs, rapid advancements in domestic natural gas production have offered a ray of hope.

Innovations in horizontal drilling and a procedure known as hydraulic fracturing (or “fracking”) allow us to more efficiently and safely extract the gas trapped in our nation’s vast shale deposits. But shale gas extraction is under assault.

Fracking has become the latest environmental cause celebre for professional activists and their allies in government. Their actions could ensnare this promising domestic energy revolution in a quagmire of legal uncertainty, choking off hundreds of thousands of jobs in the process.

At least a century’s worth of natural gas resides in deposits spanning 36 states such as the Marcellus Shale in the mid-Atlantic region. Mile-long wells are drilled, encased in concrete, and then injected with a fracturing solution, which is 99 percent water and sand.

Fracking opponents have bombarded the media with claims that the process contaminates groundwater, propels global warming, and even causes earthquakes.

Governmental or independent scientific authorities have discounted each of these assertions. But agenda-driven ideologues can’t be swayed by facts. Instead, they have pursued a campaign straight out of the Activism 101 playbook.

A 2010 documentary, “Gasland,” painted a profoundly misleading picture of natural gas extraction. Energized by the movie and its sympathetic media coverage, activists lobbied cities and towns to pass local laws banning or limiting fracking.

More than 100 cities as large as Pittsburgh and towns as small as Dryden, N.Y., have adopted such laws. Some face legal challenges. For example, an energy exploration company, which has invested more than $5 million in the Dryden area, has sued the town, arguing New York state law supersedes such local rules.

At the state level, both New York and New Jersey have banned fracking until more studies are done. Advocates for plaintiffs with groundwater contamination suits have urged New York legislators to create a strict liability standard for such legal actions.

And not to be left out, the New York attorney general has sued to stop a Pennsylvania-based commission from issuing proposed rules on fracking.

Even though the states regulate oil and gas activities, activists have sought an extra layer of red tape from the federal government. Not surprisingly, federal bureaucrats are eager to oblige.

Illegals are trashing America’s border areas

“I have learned to live with trash,” said fifth-generation Arizona rancher Jim Chilton.

He saw his once-beautiful ranch, just a few miles from the border with Mexico, is now dotted with clusters of crushed trees and cactus, whole hillsides have been turned into charred eyesores, years worth of his award-winning conservation projects obliterated — and the whole thing is littered with trash, tons and tons of trash. And some of the trash was dead bodies.

Chilton had the misfortune of settling in the path of what would become a dangerous drug- and human-smuggling route on the U.S.-Mexican border, parallel with the notorious Peck Canyon Corridor.

“I’ve got 30,000 to 40,000 illegal aliens coming right through the ranch every year, and the Forest Service says each one leaves about eight pounds of trash. That means 100 tons of trash. Some cows eat the plastic bags and about 10 head a year die a slow and painful death. At $1,200 a head, that means we lose $12,000 a year to trash.”

Chilton saw southern Arizona not as the headline-grabbing political flashpoint of the Justice Department’s failed “Fast and Furious” guns-to-smugglers tracking project, but as the land-grabbing opportunism of Obama’s resource management agencies and, sadly, the failure of the U.S. Border Patrol to secure that bloody line separating the United States from Mexico.

The land-grabbing chapter of the trash story has gone largely unnoticed, but surfaced last year when the Bureau of Land Management proposed to shut down target shooting on 490,000 acres in the Sonoran Desert National Monument — and in large swaths of other public lands as well.

The reason? Monument manager Richard Hanson claimed shooters were leaving trash at the shooting sites, an outrageously trumped up excuse, but Hanson’s claim couldn’t be refuted at the time.

The BLM had closed 400,000 acres of publicly owned, national monument lands across three states to recreational shooting activities in 2010, labeling recreational shooting as a resource-harming activity and a public safety threat.

That was a clear signal showing that the SDNM move was just another step in Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s obnoxious “lock-it-up-and-kick-’em-out” plans that have drawn the ire of Congress.

Arizona’s Republican Rep. Jeff Flake plans to introduce the Recreational Shooting Protection Act this week, which will allow for greater congressional oversight over the closures of these target shooting lands.

A government employee stepped forward on condition of anonymity to say, “I visited Ironwood National Monument in 2007 with two BLM employees. The place was absolutely devastated by illegals, yet all the BLM men wanted to talk about was the shooting ranges, and find trash that would fit the shooter profile. They were just trying to blame it on gun owners who use the shooting ranges.”

Foreign hackers targeted U.S.

Foreign hackers caused a pump at an Illinois water plant to fail last week, according to a preliminary state report. Experts said the cyber-attack, if confirmed, would be the first known to have damaged one of the systems that supply Americans with water, electricity and other essentials of modern life.

Companies and government agencies that rely on the Internet have for years been routine targets of hackers, but most incidents have resulted from attempts to steal information or interrupt the functioning of Web sites. The incident in Springfield, Ill., would mark a departure because it apparently caused physical destruction.

Federal officials confirmed that the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security were investigating damage to the water plant but cautioned against concluding that it was necessarily a cyber-attack before all the facts could be learned. “At this time there is no credible corroborated data that indicates a risk to critical infrastructure entities or a threat to public safety,” said DHS spokesman Peter Boogaard.

News of the incident became public after Joe Weiss, an industry security expert, obtained a report dated Nov. 10 and collected by an Illinois state intelligence center that monitors security threats. The original source of the information was unknown and impossible to immediately verify.

The report, which Weiss read to The Washington Post, describes how a series of minor glitches with a water pump gradually escalated to the point where the pump motor was being turned on and off frequently. It soon burned out, according to the report.

Burger King Introduces New Thing To Throw In Front Of Kids After Another Hellish Day At Work

Fast-food chain Burger King held a press conference Tuesday to unveil the newest thing on its menu for parents to halfheartedly throw in front of their kids’ faces after yet an-other hellish day at the office. “Whether they’re too exhausted to prepare the simplest meal or just want something for their kids to chew on quietly in the backseat so they can enjoy the first 10 minutes of peace and quiet they’ve had all day, parents will love this new thing,” said senior vice president Alex Macedo, adding that the thing will also come in barbecue flavor. “It’s hot, basic sustenance in a wrapper, and it’s perfect for kids whose parents are glumly sifting through bills or wearily going over paperwork for tomorrow’s 9 a.m. meeting.” Macedo added that the new item will also come with a stupid little toy thing that should keep kids occupied for at least another 15 minutes.

‘How Dare You?!’: Alan Colmes, Mike Gallagher Get Into Shouting Match Over Occupy Wall Street-Tea Party Comparison

Liberal commentator Alan Colmes and conservative talk show host Mike Gallagher got into a shouting match Friday on Fox News after Colmes likened the Occupy Wall Street movement to the Tea Party.

Fox News host Megyn Kelly kicked off the segment asking Colmes whether he thought it was time for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and others to take back their praise of Occupy Wall Street in the wake of violent episodes that have dominated headlines about the movement.

Colmes denounced the instances of violence, but charged the media “of course wants to focus on the small number of people who are causing disruptions” and that there’s an “overwhelming number of people who are doing this the way it should be done.”

Gallagher said Democrats “have been in bed with these folks” since the movement started and he hasn’t heard a single Democrat “denounce these lawless thugs.”

“Mike you are smearing the entire group of people and condemning them…based on the actions of a few” he said. “[You’re] losing sight that in fact the Tea Party and the Occupy Wall Streeters have a lot in common.”

“How dare you?! How dare you?!” Gallagher blasted back, calling it a “scurrilous comparison.“ ”Are you kidding me Alan?…You cannot compare the Tea Partiers to these bunch of lawless degenerate thugs. They’re thugs, they’re anarchists.”
