Revent events bring renewed focus on the importance of finding a way to fund the Bennett Middle School replacement project. The Board of Education is encouraged by the willingness of our County Council members to meet Friday with members of the School Building Commission, the county executive and members of his staff to revisit the decision about the future of the Bennett Middle School project. We were pleased that many interested community members were also present. The purpose of this meeting was to share updated information about increased funding from the state and to consider options for the project.
The Board of Education requested this meeting because the time for a decision on this project is less than one month away. As noted at the meeting, we now have unprecedented state funding support for this project. The state funding cost share formula is at 96 percent, the highest-ever in our county and in Maryland. As a result of this and other redesigning factors, the project cost is now reduced by $8 million and could be lower should a second option be chosen.
Wicomico County will suffer a severe setback to our educational system should this project fail to move forward. We have every reason to believe that our present funding position at the state level would be quickly filled by another county if we choose to delay this project another year. Losing our “place in line” will result in the delay of the Bennett Middle project for years to come. We can not and must not let this become a reality.
I encourage citizens county-wide and especially those in schools directly affected by this project to share your support with our elected officials. All too often they hear from a vocal minority and not the silent majority. Express your opinion about this now. In this busy season, take a minute to call, write or email the offices of our County Council members and county executive. We can find a way to move this project forward if we have the will to do so.
Ron Willey, president
Wicomico County Board of Education
Until the Wicomico County Board of Ed opens thier books so we know exactly where they are wasting money, they deserve nothing. Government schools are destroying America! I am tired of hearing that it is for the kids. That is a lie and we will have proof of this soon. The WCBO are thieves.
Glenn Beck has been in the news quite a bit the past few days but, no matter how many media fights he gets in, the real story for him continues to be the development of his network GBTV. It’s been interesting to see the different shows the network has produced and how closely they adhere to the Beck brand. For example, the political comedy show, The B.S. of A., has had some jokes that seem like they fit the big boss’ ideology (like this funny communist game show bit) while other segments make it clear that, as Brian Sack promised, the show’s its own thing. So, some might be asking when GBTV is going to produce a show that really feels like a Glenn Beck show. Where’s the piece of television that completely embodies everything he represents and distills it into a narrative chunk?
Well, how about a reality series about an American family heading off into the woods to learn how to use guns so as to prepare for some kind of vaguely defined apocalypse? Oh my God, yes.
The absolute Beck-gasm I just described is apparently a real thing. It’s called Independence USA and it’s premiering in January. I’ll let the GBTV press release give you a description:
“Concerned that the economy could collapse? Or that a natural disaster could wipe out our infrastructure? So is Frank, and he is doing something about it! Believing that America has become too reliant on a crumbling foundation, Frank is preparing his family for life “off the grid,” admiring the way people lived in the 19th century. Like them, he longs to become completely independent. So he is embarking on one project at a time hoping to prepare his family for the worst, such as building a car that runs on wood in case gasoline supplies are interrupted, becoming expert hunters when grocery stores are no longer in existence, and making his own alcohol for barter when the dollar collapses. Frank does it all with determination, intelligence, and good humor. He’ll need all that and more, as he attempts to motivate a family that neither shares his fervor nor wishes to sacrifice the comforts and conveniences of 21st century life. In the series premiere- ‘A Hunting We Will Go’- we meet the Belcastro’s as they set out on a journey to be a self-sufficient family. Frank wants the family to be able to hunt and kill their own food but not every one is on board. Starting with making their own weapons Frank and his son Adam really learn an appreciation for the hunt but wonder if they will succeed.”

The White House said Tuesday it will veto a payroll tax cut extension being prepared by House Republicans, with President Obama insisting the bill also must raise taxes on the wealthy rather than cut government spending.
In a statement of policy, the White House said the bill, which the House will vote on later Tuesday, is a Republican effort at politics rather than a compromise deal.
“This debate should not be about scoring political points. This debate should be about cutting taxes for the middle class,” the statement said.
Republicans say they have given Mr. Obama everything he wants in the bill, including an extension of this year’s payroll tax cut, additional limited unemployment benefits and a continuation of full payments to doctors who treat Medicare patients.
But rather than imposing a tax increase to offset the costs, as Democrats wanted, the Republican proposed a freeze on spending for federal salaries.
An online petition has been landing in the inboxes of pro-Israel Americans this month, many of whom are expressing shock at the Portland public school system for allowing a Palestinian hip-hop group with offensive lyrics justifying terrorism and comparing Israelis to Nazis to perform at a city high school.
The group, named DAM, was invited to perform at Lincoln High School last month. Simply knowing the band’s name, DAM – blood in Arabic and Hebrew – raises serious questions why school officials would position this group in front of impressionable students. Their lyrics raise even more questions about the judgment of these school officials.
Sponsored by Portland State University Christians United for Israel, the petition states:
The lyrics demonize Israeli Jews, calling them rapists and Nazis, justifying terrorism against them.. (”You’re a Democracy? It’s more like the Nazis…Your raping of the Arab soul gave birth to your child: The suicide bomber.”) These lyrics are threatening to Jewish students at Lincoln, and do not represent the mainstream opinions of Palestinians and Arab Israelis.
A sample of the group’s work: one DAM song called “Min Irhabi” or “Who’s a Terrorist?” is filled with anti-Israel propaganda and in-your-face lyrics, that many parents – regardless of their political stripe – would just as soon not have their children get a free helping of at school. With these few lines, one gets the picture:
Who’s a terrorist? I’m a terrorist?
How am I a terrorist while I live in my country
Who’s a terrorist? You’re a terrorist!
You’re swallowing me while I live in my country
Killing me like you killed my ancestors […]
