Just a face in a crowd? Scans pick up ID, personal data

As you scan the face on that giant billboard, it may just be scanning your face right back.

Increasingly sophisticated digital facial-recognition technology is opening new possibilities in business, marketing, advertising and law enforcement while exacerbating fears about the loss of privacy and the violation of civil liberties.

Businesses foresee a day when signs and billboards with face-recognition technology can instantly scan your face and track what other ads you’ve seen recently, adjust their message to your tastes and buying history and even track your birthday or recent home purchase. The FBI and other U.S. law enforcement agencies already are exploring facial-recognition tools to track suspects, quickly single out dangerous people in a crowd or match a grainy security-camera image against a vast database to look for matches.

Many fear that future is coming too quickly, with facial-recognition technology becoming increasingly advanced, available and affordable before restrictions on its use can be put into place. Concerns have been raised on Capitol Hill in recent weeks that FBI searches using the technology could trample Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable search and seizure, while some in the industry say excessive regulations could cripple cutting-edge technology.

“In our country, government shouldn’t be looking over your shoulder unless it has a reason,” said Jay Stanley, senior policy analyst with the American Civil Liberties Union’s speech, privacy and technology project. “They should not be collecting data on innocent subjects.”

Locking Up Baby Formula? Bloomberg Slammed for Newest Breastfeeding Initiative

Mayor Bloomberg, also known as “Nanny Bloomberg” thanks to his many regulations for New York City, has gone a step beyond banning sugary sodas and trans fats, according to the New York Post. Now, it seems he is also trying to regulate breast milk.

According to the Post, Bloomberg is actually pushing hospitals to keep their baby formulas “behind locked doors” so that new mothers will be more likely to breastfeed. Participating hospitals will begin on September 3d.

The New York Post has more:

The nanny state is going after moms.

Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.

While breast-feeding activists applaud the move, bottle-feeding moms are bristling at the latest lactation lecture.

“If they put pressure on me, I would get annoyed,” said Lynn Sidnam, a Staten Island mother of two formula-fed girls, ages 4 months and 9 years. “It’s for me to choose.”

Under Latch On NYC, new mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications.

With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to. Staffers will explain why she should offer the breast instead.

“It’s the patient’s choice,” said Allison Walsh, of Beth Israel Medical Center. “But it’s our job to educate them on the best option.”

DHS Prepares for Civil Unrest as Obama Poised to Destroy 2nd Amendment

Surveillance drones have a new mission. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) they will be used for “public safety”. Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the DHS, told a House Committee meeting on Homeland Security that the more than 30,000 drones that will be deployed into American skies are just arbitrarily watching out for US citizens.

Napolitano stated : “With respect to Science and Technology, that directorate, we do have a funded project, I think it’s in California, looking at drones that could be utilized to give us situational awareness in a large public safety [matter] or disaster, such as a forest fire, and how they could give us better information.”

Secretly, DHS have been taking bid for contractors who can install “aerial remote sensing” which uses light detection and ranging (LIDAR) that would be part of the unmanned drone missions within domestic US territory.

“DHS believes these airborne images are essential for homeland defense missions, such as planning for National Special Security Events (Super Bowls or a national political conventions come to mind); enhancing border, port and airport security; as well as performing critical infrastructure inventories and assessments” and has spent over $50 million to employ contractors, as well as processors for images and dissemination throughout the DHS.

Coincidentally, the Federal Protective Service (FPS) has been given the responsibility to protecting federally owned property while preparing for civilian led riots expected in the near future.

Part of the preparatory measures was an order of 150 sets of riot gear that was requested to be filled exponentially – within 15 days.

The items requested were:

– 147 “Upper Body and Shoulder Protection” which are brand name or equal to “Centurion Soft Shell Riot Control System (CPX2500)”
– 152 “Thigh-Groin Protector” brand name or equivalent to “Centurion TPX200”
– 156 “Forearm Protectors” brand name or equivalent to “Centurion (FP100)”
– 147 units of “Hard Shell Shin Guards” brand name or equivalent to “Centurion (TS70)”
– 147 carry bags brand name or equivalent to Exotech (E4), 147 tactical gloves brand name or equivalent to “Damascus (DMZ333)”
– 147 riot helmets brand name or equivalent to “MaxPro (TR1000)”

The FPS is anticipating that police or military wearing the gear would encounter “blunt force trauma” to the upper torso, as well as potential beatings with “blunt objects”. To compliment these outfits, are required riot helmets with “tactical face shield” equipped with “liquid seals”.

In addition, the US military are ready to assist with local law enforcement “if called upon”.

Five hundred military police and dogs will be allocated on civilian matters, as reported by mainstream media (MSM) have included the reallocation of hundreds of military police officers being trained to “assist local authorities” in investigation, crime scene and case building. These same soliders were just stationed in combat areas like Afghantistan.

Meanwhile, the TSA have been patrolling trains stations and bus terminals in California.

More Liberal Stupidity: Council Speaker Christine Quinn Asks NYU to Boot Chick-fil-A for Supporting Traditional Marriage

Despite Mayor Bloomberg’s welcome to Chick-fil-A after the company’s president made anti-gay-marriage comments, Council Speaker Christine Quinn began an online effort to boot the chain’s only location from the city Saturday.

Chick-fil-A, a chain of fried chicken shacks with a biblical bent that’s wildly popular in the South, currently doesn’t have any New York locations listed in the 32 stores posted under ‘Future Openings’ on their web site. Nor do they have public plans for new stores in New York State, or Northeast region.

But Saturday Quinn began a campaign to get the one New York City location, at 5 University Place on NYU’s campus, booted, saying the city is not a place for intolerance or homophobia

In a letter to John Sexton, NYU’s president, Quinn writes, “I do not want establishments in my city that hold such discriminatory views.”

“I urge you to sever your relationship with the Chick-fil-A establishment that exists on your campus. This establishment should be replaced with an establishment where the ownership does not denigrate a portion of our population,” she adds.

NYU did not immediately return calls for comment.

Quinn also established an online petition Saturday, and asked New Yorkers to sign it, demanding that Dan Cathy, the chain’s president, apologize for anti-gay comments made to a Christian newspaper, and change his stance on gay equality issues.

Quinn’s comments come after a report revealed that of Chick-fil-A’s charitable work, $2 million had gone to anti-gay groups in 2010. Last week, mayors in Chicago and Boston spoke out against the chain’s intolerant public attitude, and said they would not welcome the stores.

Outside the only place one can order the fried food, NYU students were split over whether or not getting rid of the chain was setting a good example for freedom of speech. (The shop was closed for the summer, until August 26.)

“I heard that there have been some recent discussions within the NYU community about some of the donations that they have been making to some anti-gay organizations,” said Daniel Lee, 21, from Pennsylvania. “If that’s true, then I certainly don’t agree with it,” he said.

Obama to Olympians: You Didn’t Win That

Swimmer Ryan Lochte claimed the first gold medal for U.S. athletes at the London Olympics on Saturday. But Barack Obama has a message for Lochte, and other American medal winners: You didn’t win that.

“Look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own.”

But what about all the hard work, all the training, that Olympic athletes endure to attain success?

“You think you’ve been successful because you work hard; a lot of people work hard.”

Maybe Olympic success is the result of smarter training?

“I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there.”

Sorry, America’s Olympic athletes; you didn’t win anything. You’re simply the end product of governmental policy.

“Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.”

Doctor Shortage Likely to Worsen With Health Law

In the Inland Empire, an economically depressed region in Southern California, President Obama’s health care law is expected to extend insurance coverage to more than 300,000 people by 2014. But coverage will not necessarily translate into care: Local health experts doubt there will be enough doctors to meet the area’s needs. There are not enough now.

Other places around the country, including the Mississippi Delta, Detroit and suburban Phoenix, face similar problems. The Association of American Medical Colleges estimates that in 2015 the country will have 62,900 fewer doctors than needed. And that number will more than double by 2025, as the expansion of insurance coverage and the aging of baby boomers drive up demand for care. Even without the health care law, the shortfall of doctors in 2025 would still exceed 100,000.

Health experts, including many who support the law, say there is little that the government or the medical profession will be able to do to close the gap by 2014, when the law begins extending coverage to about 30 million Americans. It typically takes a decade to train a doctor.

“We have a shortage of every kind of doctor, except for plastic surgeons and dermatologists,” said Dr. G. Richard Olds, the dean of the new medical school at the University of California, Riverside, founded in part to address the region’s doctor shortage. “We’ll have a 5,000-physician shortage in 10 years, no matter what anybody does.”

Experts describe a doctor shortage as an “invisible problem.” Patients still get care, but the process is often slow and difficult. In Riverside, it has left residents driving long distances to doctors, languishing on waiting lists, overusing emergency rooms and even forgoing care.

In Baltimore, Illegal Immigrants Welcomed with Open Arms

The mayor of Baltimore, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake (D), deliberately wants the city compete to become the nation’s largest sanctuary city.

Baltimore’s unemployment rate is at 10 percent. For blacks in Baltimore, the unemployment rate is over 20 percent. People are fleeing Maryland — and its major cities like Baltimore — to states like Virginia and North Carolina that have better conditions for economic growth. But none of that seems to matter to Rawlings-Blake, who thinks opening up Baltimore to illegal immigrants (her goal is to attract at least 10,000 immigrants to Baltimore) will solve — and will not exacerbate — the city’s economic woes and counteract population decline.

According to The Washington Post, Rawlings-Blake (D) signed an order in March prohibiting police and social agencies from asking anyone about their immigration status and asked federal immigration authorities to tell anyone they arrest that they are not agents of the city. And this is a part of a broader strategy to attract at least 10,000 immigrants to the city, regardless of their legal status.

As the Post notes, The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that Maryland had the nation’s 10th-largest population of illegal immigrants. The Census does not identify illegal immigrants, so it is not known how many of Maryland’s immigrant population is illegal. And Baltimore wants the lion’s share of the immigrant population — legal and illegal.

Del. Patrick L. McDonough (R-Baltimore County) said he is working with the conservative watchdog group, Judicial Watch, to determine whether the Baltimore mayor is aiding and abetting people in breaking the law. McDonough also said the mayor’s order creates a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants who will compete with current residents for jobs.

“For the mayor to want to increase the population of Baltimore City in principle is an admirable thing,” McDonough told the paper. “But by going after people who don’t have a lawful presence, and all of the accompanying cultural and criminal issues associated with that policy, you are counterproductive. You’re going to discourage people who live in the city from continuing to be there.”

The order that the mayor signed says it is incumbent upon the city to “to ensure that the newest members of our community are extended the same rights and protections the rest of us seek to preserve and enjoy,” but that language ignores that illegal immigrants would be given special privileges legal immigrants who came to Baltimore legally were not.

Glenn Beck‘s ’Restoring Love’ Address

With all the problems in the world — and with politicians giving all those speeches — doesn’t it feel good to do the work? Just stop whining and roll up your sleeves! One million meals have just left the stadium. We’re feeding the hungry in 11 cities.

There are churches that can worship again when it rains, because we – YOU – put a roof up. The elderly, the lonely, those who are afraid. We said to them: Be not afraid! For we are with you and we will be your shelter — shelter from the storm.

Those who came with your parents. I want you to get used to seeing them in action. And tell your parents this: “Mom, Dad…I liked doing this. I liked YOU doing this. And I don’t want this to be a one-day thing.” Hold each other to that promise. Because this is your inheritance.

This whole event is about you. We did this for you. It’s about what you watch on TV, it’s about your music, movies and school. It’s about your America — the America we are building for you. Right now.

We talked tonight about America’s history, the pilgrims, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King — and these men, they are part of history.

And you may be thinking…that’s history! I hate history! All those guys are DEAD! But that’s not true. History is always alive. History breathes. It doesn’t belong behind glass. It belongs to you. History is where we learn who we really are.

Everything we have — everything we enjoy — was done by someone else before we were born. The America we have today is what someone else created for us. We inherited America — this America — from our parents and grandparents. What we have, they built.

We can’t be blamed for what they did wrong. And we can’t take credit for what they did right. We didn’t fight their wars. We didn’t march with them. We didn’t build the schools. That was done for us. And we will do that for our children.

That’s how an inheritance works. You can’t control what you get from your parents, but you can shape what you leave behind. If you get an inheritance you can improve on it or you can spend it.

The story of America is filled with great families. The Rockefellers. The Carnegies. The Vanderbilts. Some have grown in prosperity. Some have spent it all. In Newport, the mansions sit high on cliffs. But the families that built them can’t afford to live there anymore. They inherited something great, but they lost it all. All they have is their famous names.

If this can happen to a great family, it can happen to a great country. We must not become America in name only. We must always strive to be a great country.

We don’t have to spend our inheritance. We can build on it. Invest it. Improve it. Make it bigger and better. That’s your choice. It’s our choice. Our inheritance is America. And we have to decide: Are we going to spend it all? Or will we make the dream bigger?

Tonight, I charge each of you with a mission. No matter your age. No matter how you got here — or how far you traveled. A mission. To act. To commit. To shape the future.

To do one pure thing: Make America better than it is today. Build a bigger inheritance, do what we’re supposed to do for our children. Every generation of America faces this challenge. Every generation. Some succeed. And some fail. Those who have failed, failed because they waited for someone else to act. They found out much too late that

When you wait for someone to help you that someone will show up — and sometimes — they may give you a push. But far too often they will push you around, there is a difference between getting pushed and getting pushed around.

Two results. Two choices. For two types of people. There ARE two kinds of Americans. Not Democrats and Republicans. Not God-fearing and God-doubting. Bigger than those differences. Much bigger.

I think there are two kinds of Americans. Those who like to be pushed. And those who push themselves. Those who see our problems and refuse to see our blessings. And those who see our problems as our blessings.

Tonight, I ask you: Which are you? Where do you stand? With those who like to be pushed? Or those who push themselves?
