Bloomberg wants to ban tobacco on display

A new proposal would require New York City retailers to keep tobacco products out of sight under a first-in-the-nation proposal aimed at reducing the youth smoking rate, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday.

The legislation would require stores to keep tobacco products in cabinets, drawers, under the counter, behind a curtain or in other concealed spots. They could only be visible when an adult is making a purchase or during restocking.

While New York City would be the first in the nation to do this, Bloomberg says prohibitions began to be implemented in Iceland in 2001 and Canada in 2005, and these countries have already seen substantial declines in youth smoking.

“Such displays suggest that smoking is a normal activity,” Bloomberg said. “And they invite young people to experiment with tobacco.”

Stores devoted primarily to the sale of tobacco products would be exempt from the display ban.

The mayor’s office said retail stores could still advertise tobacco products under the legislation.

“We have made tremendous strides in combating smoking in New York City but this leading killer still threatens the health of our children,” said Dr. Thomas A. Farley, the health commissioner, “and youth smoking rates have remained flat at 8.5 percent since 2007.”

Farley said the city’s comprehensive anti-smoking program cut adult smoking rates by nearly a third — from 21.5 percent in 2002 to 14.8 percent in 2011 — but the youth rate has remained flat, at 8.5 percent, since 2007.

Smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death among New Yorkers, Farley said.

The legislation, to be introduced in the City Council on Wednesday, is comprised of two separate bills that Farley called “logical, important next steps to further protect our teens from tobacco.”

The second bill, called the “Sensible Tobacco Enforcement” bill, strengthens enforcement of discounted and smuggled cigarettes.

AMERICANS GETTING SERIOUS ABOUT IMPEACHMENT

Not only have voters begun to connect the dots between the faltering economy and global insecurity to President Obama’s administration in significant numbers, they also have begun to join him in calling for “change.”

Only this is the impeachment type of change, not the type Obama has so often preached.

The poll shows those advocating impeachment nearly equal to the number of those against it. For example, regarding Obama’s campaign for amnesty to illegals, 44 percent say he should be impeached for that, while only 48 percent say he should not. And 46 percent say they think Obama should be impeached for launching the war to remove Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, while 49 percent say no.

“Taken by itself, any of these questions about President Obama could be ignored, but it becomes much more questionable when all of these … administration actions are taken as a whole,” said Fritz Wenzel, whose public opinion and media consulting company Wenzel Strategies did the poll.

The scientific survey was done by telephone March 7-12 and contains a margin of error of 2.92 percent.

“Obama appears to have found a way to split the nation directly down the middle on each issue, but, as his plummeting poll numbers may now indicate, the American public may well be catching up with the cumulative effect of this administration’s handling of the Constitution and the federal government,” Wenzel said.

He noted that Obama’s job approval is in freefall.

Is he serious? No immediate Crisis in terms of Debt?

Wise Conservatism / the blog

“We don’t have an immediate crisis in terms of Debt.”
-Barack Obama- March 13, 2013-

He says he listens to us. Well, if he does, then he is ignorant of the workings of the office that he has held for the last four years. And to hold an office for that long, and still not be able to grasp the concept of what he is supposed to do by law, is sheer stupidity.

There, I said it. Barack Obama may be smart, but he is a stupid man.

Here is a way to know that America has its defenders, even though none of them are in the White House. Think of this analogy. The sheep pretend the wolf will never come. But the sheepdog lives for that day. The sheep I am talking about are Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, John Kerry, John McCain, and all the…

Meet Obama’s Pick for Labor Secretary: ‘A Radical’s Radical’

President Barack Obama gave a glowing rollout Monday to Thomas Perez, his choice to lead the Labor Department after an aggressive stint as the nation’s chief civil rights enforcer. But the nomination quickly ran into trouble as a Republican senator declared he would block the nomination until GOP concerns about Perez’s Justice Department tenure are addressed.

Further, former DOJ attorney J. Christian Adams alleged that Perez a “radical’s radical” in an interview on Mark Levin’s radio show.

“This is a man for whom law is a nuisance … this is a man who is advancing a radical agenda by using his power in the Obama administration,” Adams told Levin.

As TheBlaze’s Meredith Jessup points out, Adams also alleges that Perez provided false testimony in the Black Panther voter intimidation case.

In 2010, former DOJ civil rights attorney J. Christian Adams resigned in protest of the Obama administration’s handling of a [voter] intimidation case involving the New Black Panther Party. A month later, Adams told Fox News that Perez provided false testimony before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights about the Black Panther case. In his testimony, Perez told the commission that the facts of the case – NBPP members dressed in military-style fatigues standing in front of a polling location armed with billy clubs — didn’t amount to voter intimidation under the law.

Even left finds DHS ammo buy ‘very troubling’

The White House may paint worries over drones in American skies, federal agencies buying up billions of bullets and local police forces arming themselves with military-style equipment as just “bogeyman” issues of the radical right, but an interview on New York City’s WABC Radio reveals even the left is starting to grow worried.

Medea Benjamin, co-founder of Code Pink, a left-wing “peace and social justice movement” known for its colorful marches and protests, told WABC host Aaron Klein the potential for the Obama administration to abuse its growing domestic police power is “extremely troubling.”

Klein asked Benjamin, author of “Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control,” if she was concerned that military-style drones now authorized to fly over U.S. skies could be used against American citizens, the same question that prompted U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., to filibuster in the Senate earlier this month.

“Very much so,” Benjamin replied. “We see a militarization of the U.S. police forces here in the United States, and it’s a very troubling tendency.”

Furthermore, Benjamin charged she was “upset” that liberal Democrats – who might question and fight the federal government’s growing police powers under a Republican administration – “have been very quiet when this is happening under Obama.”

Klein brought up concerns, such as those reported by WND, that the federal Department of Homeland Security and other non-military federal agencies have opened purchase orders for 1.5 billion or more rounds of ammunition over the last year. The ammo buy has been only one of several indications of a bigger, stronger and more militarized police presence in the U.S.

“Are we leading up to some sort of military-style control in America?” Klein asked.

“I think the potential is there,” Benjamin replied, “and the fact that 10 years after 911 the U.S. is still keeping the American people in the state of fear about terrorism and using that to take billions and billions of our tax dollars to use to set up these kind of facilities and equip our local law-enforcement agencies with military equipment and potentially really be turning us into a society where Big Brother is watching us all the time, I think is extremely troubling.”
