The Orioles were among the last teams in baseball to use their first manager challenge, but it was worth the wait. Baltimore had a two-out sixth-inning call on Nelson Cruz overturned for an RBI single against the Red Sox on Saturday to tie the game at 2.
Cruz hit a ball deep into the hole at third base and Brock Holt backhanded the ball before throwing across the diamond for a close play in which Cruz was initially ruled to be out at first base. Manager Buck Showalter came out and challenged the call, with the replay taking a quick 49 seconds and allowing Adam Jones to score from third.
The Orioles and Cardinals entered the day as the only two clubs in baseball to not have a replay challenge this season. The overturned call also marked the 500th RBI of Cruz’s career.
