Rochester, N.Y. – After eight days of meticulous counting and waiting, Congresswoman Louise Slaughter will retain her seat in the House of Representatives.

According to Rep. Slaughter’s office, her Republican challenger Mark Assini called her office Wednesday afternoon to concede after the Monroe County Board of Elections finished counting nearly all of the ballots.

Slaughter, the Democratic incumbent, received 96,800 votes to Assini’s 95,931 votes. That makes a difference of 869 votes.

There was some question as to whether how many military ballots were outstanding. Military ballots that are post marked by Election Day have until November 17 to arrive at the Board of Elections, according to New York State law. The Board of Elections anticipates there will only be a handful of these.
