NY raising penalties for failed wage notifications

Updated: Sunday, January 4 2015, 03:46 PM EST

Albany, N.Y. (AP) — New York is revising notice requirements and raising penalties meant to prevent employer theft of wages.

The new law authorizes penalties of $50 a day — previously that was weekly — for failing to provide new workers within 10 business days with written notice in English or their primary language of the rate or rates of pay, whether hourly, daily, by shift, weekly, salaried or commission, as well as any tip, meal or lodging allowances under New York’s minimum wage law.

Penalties can rise for repeat violations.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says legislators have agreed to amend the provision that ends the requirement for annual written notices, making it effective for all of 2015 instead of at the end of February.
