5-Year-Old Threatened With Suspension For Making Gun Out Of Legos

A mother says her 5-year-old boy was threatened with suspension after he made a gun out of Legos during an after school program.

Sheila Cruz received a written warning recently about her son from the after school staff at the Hyannis West Elementary School because he had been using toys inappropriately.

While Cruz thought her son Joseph Cardosa was just being a kid, she said school administrators called his actions a threat.

“I was given a book and they told me he’s going to be suspended if he does it again and to sign here,” Cruz told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Tuesday. “I just couldn’t believe it. He’s 5-years-old.”

Joseph’s parents called the school principal but were given the same warning.

“‘I said listen, he’s a 5-year-old, I think maybe a redirection would be more appropriate. I understand what’s going on with this whole thing in schools and everything else but couldn’t they have given him a warning?’ ” Cruz said.

“She (the principal) said, ‘it’s a threat to other children and other children could have been scared.’”

Obama Uses Failing High School as Backdrop for Immigration Speech

President Obama, looking for a high school with a majority Hispanic population to use as a backdrop for his demagogic speech on immigration reform, settled on Del Sol High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. Unfortunately, the same children to whom Obama spoke of opportunity are deprived of it at Del Sol, which dramatically underachieves academically.

According to Del Sol’s 2010-2011 School Accountability Summary Report, 54% of Hispanic students attending Del Sol were “non-proficient” in math. The school lags behind both the statewide standards and the standards of the school district on reading, writing, and mathematics; just 27% of the school population exceeded standards in reading, only 1% exceeded standards in writing, and a mere 9% exceeded standards in mathematics. While 6% of high school children in the district were either below average or abysmal in reading, 10% were at Del Sol; 22% were below average or “emergent/developing” in writing, but 38% were at Del Sol; 29% were below average or worst standard in math at the district level, but 43% were at Del Sol.

The dropout rates at Del Sol are significantly higher than at the other schools in the district. That’s particularly true for Hispanic students. While 5.1% of Hispanic kids drop out of high school in Nevada statewide, and 5.5% did at the district level, a full 9.6% did from Del Sol. Overall, Del Sol was “classified as a school which did not demonstrate Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) during the 2010-2011 school year.”

Team Obama Bans Junk Food in School Vending Machines – But Contraception Pills Are OK

The Obama Administration banned junk food in school vending machines last year. School meals will now have to offer fruits and vegetables to students every day under standards issued by the United States Department of Agriculture. Food and beverages sold in vending machines will also have to meet nutritional standards.

But, Morning After Plan B pills are OK.

The Obama administration has approved a request by a college in Pennsylvania to sell the Plan B drug through a vending machine. The Food and Drug Administration will let Shippensburg University continue to dispense the morning after pill via a machine that it installed in the school nurse’s office.
